Kathi's Oval Halloween Basket

 

Materials:

9 x 13 Oval Birch Base and 12" Mountain Swing Handle Supplied by C & D BASKETS

1/2" Flat Reed for Stakes

1/4" Flat Oval Reed for Weavers

1/2" Flat Oval for Rim

3/16" Flat Oval for Lashing

#2 Round Reed for Stabilizing row

#3 Seagrass (rim filler)

 

Preparation:

Cut 32 pieces of 1/2" flat reed at 8" long for stakes of the basket

16 of these stakes should be dyed Black. Leave the others natural.

 

Weaving Instructions:

Soak stakes briefly in a pan of water.  

Mark center on two sides of the oval base. (the narrow end)

Insert one black stake on each mark on the sides of the base.  Insert 15 stakes evenly spaced on each side alternating dyed and natural.

-Twine around the base for 3 rows using # 2 round reed to lock stakes into place.

-Upstake.

-Weave 6 rows of 1/4" Flat Oval Reed (Natural)

-Weave 2 rows of 1/4 Flat Reed (Dyed Orange)

-Weave 1 row of 1/2" Flat (Dyed Black)

-Weave 2 rows of 1/4 Flat Reed (Dyed Orange)

-Weave 5 rows of 1/4" Flat Oval Reed (Natural)

-Weave 1 row of 1/2 Flat Reed for rim row.  Be sure dyed stakes are on inside of rim row so they don't need to be downstaked.  Trim inside stakes ( should be the black) 

Downstake the Natural stakes

-Insert handle ear on narrow end of basket, centering on either side of black stake.  Repeat with second ear on other end of basket, make sure the ear is through the handle before inserting

Use 1/2" flat for inside rim row and 1/2" flat oval for outside rim. Insert seagrass; double lash  using 11/64" flat oval
